The difference between static contrast and dynamic contrast in display parameters

Display is a digital product with many parameters, we can compare their various parameters to judge the good and bad between them, but many people transition to focus on parameters, into a blind parameter party, but will fall into a variety of business traps, today to introduce the contrast trap, hope to help you cut the devil, to avoid being deceived.

Pay attention to the difference between static contrast and dynamic contrast.

Contrast refers to the brightness of the brightest area of an image and the darkest area brightness ratio, we often see 1000:1, 3000:1 is: maximum brightness: minimum brightness =1000:1 or 3000:1.

We all know that the higher the contrast, the better, because the higher the contrast, the more clear the level of light and dark levels of our display, with more dark details and light details, and the color is more vivid.

At present, the contrast ratio of the common display panel is:

VA panel (approx. 300:1 contrast ratio)

IPS panel (approx. 1000:1 contrast ratio)

TN panel (approx. 700:1 contrast ratio)

But some small partners in browsing display products, may see hundreds of thousands of: 1 contrast, this time do not understand small partners may feel that the contrast of this display is good, if you really think that you are fooled.

Here we must distinguish the difference between static contrast and dynamic contrast.

Static contrast refers to the ratio between the brightness of the brightest area and the brightness of the darkest area in the same picture with the same brightness setting (such as 50%, 90% brightness, etc.), and this ratio is generally between 700:1 and 4000:1, because the brightness of the display is controlled by a whole luminous backlight plate. When the display displays the highlight picture, the whole backlight layer emits strong light, which will pass through the liquid crystal molecules. Our liquid crystal molecules are like a door. In the area showing the pure black picture, the liquid crystal molecules in that area will close, that is, the door will close, and the light will not pass through. This time, the liquid crystal display is not pure black, but gray, as shown in the figure (pure black on the right, gray on the left), so the black of the liquid crystal display is a certain brightness, assuming that the lowest brightness of the display is 0.4nit, the brightest area is 400nit, At this point, its static contrast ratio is 400/0.4=1000:1. Those who have learned mathematics know that the numerator is unchanged, and the smaller the denominator, the greater the value, so now the means to improve the contrast of liquid crystal displays is mainly to reduce the brightness of the black field.

Different panel types, the degree of closure of liquid crystal molecules is different, so the contrast is different, such as VA panel, liquid crystal molecules close better, about 3000:1 contrast, and IPS panel liquid crystal molecules close almost, about 1000:1 contrast

Dynamic contrast refers to the ratio between the brightness of the brightest area and the brightness of the darkest area in some specific cases, and the value measured by dynamic contrast is generally far greater than the static contrast of several thousand to one.

For example, we will understand that when the manufacturer measures the dynamic contrast, it is not in the same brightness setting, for example, when the maximum brightness value is taken, the brightness is turned on to 100%, the maximum brightness value is 400nit, the minimum brightness value is turned on to 0%, the minimum brightness value is 0.001, so calculated. Contrast is 400,000:1, 0% brightness Settings at the lowest brightness will be much lower than 100% brightness, so the maximum brightness/minimum brightness ratio is much larger than the static contrast.

This dynamic contrast is just a publicity stunt. We can't reference it. Fortunately, at present, most display manufacturers do not use dynamic contrast for promotion, more or use static contrast, which is still worth praising. But when we actually encounter individual cases, we still have to distinguish.

Can't an LCD display have a static contrast ratio of tens of thousands to one? Yes, We have! It's gonna cost more! In some displays that use partition backlights, MINI LED backlights or OLED panels, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands or even unlimited static contrast can be achieved, and these partition backlights, MINI LED, OLED prices are very expensive.
